Obama to attend 9/11 anniversary events

NEW YORK - (AP) - The White House says President Barack Obamaand first lady Michelle Obama will attend events in New York City,Pennsylvania and Washington in September to mark the 10thanniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people at the World Trade Centerin lower Manhattan, at the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pa.

Spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday that Obama will pay tribute tothose who were lost. He also will honor those who responded onSept. 11, 2001, and who have served in harm's way in the decadesince then.

Vice President Joe Biden will help dedicate a memorial atShanksville to the passengers of Flight 93 on Sept. 10. That UnitedAirlines flight crashed in a southwestern Pennsylvania field afterpassengers confronted their terrorist hijackers.
