BROOKLYN - (AP) - A police officer near a school in Brooklyn has shot and killed a man the NYPD says was brandishing a fake pistol.

Police said the fatal shooting occurred Monday afternoon after they received a 911 call from a parent reporting a man with a handgun near an elementary school.

They say when they arrived, the 22-year-old man pointed the phony gun at them during an ensuing confrontation on the street outside the school. A uniformed officer responded by firing three shots.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital. His name was not immediately released.
