BEDFORD-STUYVESANT - Police say an officer shot and killed a Brooklyn man Saturday morning after being threatened with a knife.

Police say detectives arrived at 650 Decatur St. to speak with 20-year-old Darryl Battle about a check-scam investigation. Family friends of Battle say he made the appointment with the detectives in an effort to be cooperative.

"They came to ask questions and he invited them back to come ask more questions," says Tony Herbert, a community leader in the neighborhood.

Police say that when they entered the building's basement to question Battle, he pulled out an 11-inch knife. They say that as they tried to back out of the apartment, Battle kept advancing toward them. One of the detectives then shot him in the chest.

Battle was taken to Kings County Hospital where he later died.

Family members were shocked by the incident and say Battle always steered clear of trouble. "If he's not with his son, he's out there looking for employment," says Sh'Shonda Monique Smith, a niece of Battle's.
