BUSHWICK - Fire officials say yesterday?s fire in Bushwick that killed two men was caused by a hot-plate placed too close to a bed.

Officials say they believe the residents also tried to extinguish the fire themselves, which meant a delay in calling firefighters.

Investigators say the fire started at 16 Covert St. and spread to the surrounding buildings.

Deparmtent of Buildings officials say the building was illegally subdivided. They are currently inspecting the fire-ravaged structure to determine if it is stable.
