BROOKLYN - City building inspectors say an East New York fire that claimed the life of a man could have been prevented.

The deadly fire broke out at 568 Drew St. in the basement of a two-story house. Inspectors say the basement was illegally converted into an apartment and lacked a second exit.

Investigators say the lack of a second exit prevented the victim from escaping.
