Officials, insurance agents offer tips on filing claims

SUNSET PARK - Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) is urging residents who suffered property damage from the storm to file insurance claims as soon as possible.

Officials say it is important to become well informed on the type of coverage you have and to make sure to ask your insurance provider what documents and forms of data are needed to file a claim.

Residents are also being urged to take photographs or video of the damage before cleaning up.

Anthony Aquilino, of the Regency Insurance Agency in Marine Park, says it is very important to document damage and to make sure new issues don't stem from it, because those additional damages may not be covered by insurance.

Officials add that residents should be prepared to negotiate if the insurance company does not meet expectations.
