MANHATTAN - Parents rallied on the steps of City Hall Thursday in support of door alarms to increase school security.

The City Council is close to passing a law that will require elementary schools, as well as schools for students with special needs, to install alarms on its doors.

The bill comes six months after autistic student Avonte Oquendo walked out of his school undetected. He was found dead this past January.

Most of the City Council has already signed onto the bill. They're waiting for the chair of the Education Committee to call a hearing, and it's expected to pass soon after.
