BROOKLYN - One person suffered minor injuries during an early morning fire in Flatbush, according to firefighters.

Officials say it started on the fourth floor of 465 Ocean Ave. before 6:30 a.m.

They added that residents were forced to use their fire escapes to evacuate the multi-family building. Neighbors say they banged on each other's doors to tell them to leave, and some people from across the street even ran over to the building to help safely get everyone out.

The fire chief told News 12 that two apartments were ruined in the fire, and many others were damaged by the smoke.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but it does appear to be accidental.

The fire affected five apartments, according to Red Cross officials. The organization is helping two families with temporary housing and providing money for food and clothing.
