Plan B contraceptive more confusing than convenient for Brooklyn residents

The Plan B contraceptive was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for over-the-counter purchases over a month ago, but it is still not

SHEEPSHEAD BAY - The Plan B contraceptive was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for over-the-counter purchases over a month ago, but it is still not available at Brooklyn pharmacies.

The birth control emergency contraceptive, a product of Duramed Pharmaceuticals, is supposed to be available for anyone above the legal age of 18. The confusion surfaced when one Brooklyn resident could not find the contraceptive on the shelves of local pharmacies. When she inquired with a certified pharmacist, she was told it was not approved in New York for over-the-counter purchases. Officials from Duramed disputed that statement. They said the drug should be available in Brooklyn pharmacies by the end of the year.

Duramed officials told News 12 Brooklyn before they make the drug available without a prescription they are required to launch an educational program at area schools. They are working on implementing those programs in Brooklyn schools. They also said anyone under the age of 18 is still required to have a prescription.
