Plan unveiled to open 50 new middle schools

BROOKLYN - School's Chancellor Dennis Walcott says the School Board plans to open 50 new middle schools over the next few years.

The chancellor says it is a part of a plan to phase out failing middle schools across the city.

The schools would have to receive about $30 million in federal turn around funding in order for the plan to succeed. Walcott says it has been a challenge to keep kids from falling behind in middle school.
