Police Academy member dies after completing run

BROOKLYN - A member of the NYPD Police Academy died yesterday on the job. Officials say he collapsed after completing a run with his academy class.

Officer Sherman Abrams, of Brooklyn, was 28 years old and joined the Police Academy in July. He served as a correction officer for four years prior to joining the academy.

The mayor and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly both sent condolences to his family. The medical examiner will determine exactly how he died.
