BROOKLYN - Police are cracking down on the illegal use of fireworks during the Fourth of July weekend.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is reminding New Yorkers that the amateur use of fireworks is illegal.

A person who is caught using fireworks without a special pyrotechnics certificate will get a $750 fine. A $250 criminal penalty will be given for illegal use and discharge of fireworks. If a person is caught transporting fireworks without a permit, his car may be seized.

The FDNY also reminds people that something as harmless-looking as a sparkler can generate heat of up to 1,800 degrees, which is enough to melt gold.
