BROOKLYN - Police say a newborn baby survived after he was put into a plastic trash bag and tossed down a garbage chute.

Investigators say the infant was found in the garbage at the Walt Whitman Houses this morning. They say a building superintendent heard the boy's cries coming from the trash chute, which is attached to a compactor.

Police say the baby was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital, where he is in stable condition. Detectives are now trying to track down his mother.
