BUSHWICK - A man climbed up a fire escape and broke into a sleeping woman's unlocked bedroom window in Brooklyn before he attempted to rape her, police say.

The incident happened Saturday inside a home on Greene and Irving avenues in Bushwick around 6:45 a.m.

Police say the suspect entered the woman's bedroom window while she was asleep in her bed.

Once inside, police say the woman woke up to the man exposing himself while he attempted to get into her bed.

The woman screamed and began to kick the man, according to police.

The woman's roommate heard the victim screaming and ran into the room, sending the suspect running off.

The suspect is described as 5 foot 10 inches tall, between 18 and 20 years old and was last seen wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and red sneakers.

The NYPD recommends keeping all windows locked, especially ones near fire escapes or on the ground floor. It says residents should not buzz in people they don't know, and make sure air conditioners are not in areas that are easily accessible from the outside.  If they are, make sure they have a sleeve on them to prevent being pushed in or pulled out.  It is also advised to consider installing burglar alarms.

The NYPD tells News 12 that they also offer free home security service.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
