Police: Man killed on Linden Boulevard

EAST NEW YORK - Police are searching for a gunman they say shot and killed a man in broad daylight on Linden Boulevard.

According to police, 39-year-old Stephen Gowins was shot once in the head Monday at about 7 a.m. outside the Pink Houses. Police say the suspect is a black man wearing a gray hoodie. Witnesses say Gowins, who used a wheelchair, was killed in front of his wife, Sharon. Family members and friends say Gowins was dedicated to his wife and stepdaughter and was proud of his business, S & G.

Councilman Charles Barron called the incident ?a violent madness,? and vowed to bring the person responsible to justice.

According to court records, Gowins had served more than 10 years in prison for two manslaughter convictions. He was apparently in a wheelchair after being involved in a shooting years ago that paralyzed him.

An NYPD investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

AP wires contributed to this report.
