BROOKLYN - Police are offering Brooklyn residents tips on how to help prevent a burglary.

According to the FBI, July and August have the highest rates of burglaries.

During these warmer months, people are known to open windows to let in cool air and forget to close their windows before leaving home.

Recently, a St. James Place resident caught an attempted robber with a cast on his leg and a cane trying to break in through an open window. The intruder was scared off when the tenant came home.

Officials suggest making sure to have your keys ready before you get to your door, making sure your entrance area is well-lit, and make sure to close and lock your windows before leaving the house.

Also, if you live in an apartment, close your lobby door behind you, especially if a stranger is in the vicinity.

Police are currently searching for the alleged hobbling criminal.
