Police question owner of car in BK hit-and-run

NEW YORK - (AP) - The lawyer for a woman who owns a car involvedin a hit-and-run that gravely injured a city employee toldinvestigators Tuesday that his client's sister was driving and hadbeen admitted to a psychiatric hospital following the incident,police said.

Investigators met with car owner Cindy Jasmin at her attorney'soffice, where they questioned her about the hit-and-run that leftErinn Phelan hospitalized in extremely critical condition, policeCommissioner Raymond Kelly said.

He said Phelan, who works promoting volunteerism for a cityagency, NYC Service, was in "very, very serious condition."

Jasmin and her attorney spoke to police after the 31-year-oldwoman was arrested on a bench warrant for failure to pay a finestemming from a February 2009 arrest for driving with a suspendedlicense, according to police department spokesman Paul J. Browne.Jasmin paid the fine and is free.

During Tuesday afternoon's interview, Jasmin's attorney, AdamThompson, said his client's sister, Frances, was so worried abouther mental health following the incident that she was admitted tothe hospital, police said.

Reached by phone Tuesday night, Thompson said that he could onlyconfirm that his client was the owner of the car and that "theactual driver of the vehicle has been identified to the police."

"The Jasmin family is fully cooperating," Thompson added."Our sympathies go out to the families of the two women."
