EAST NEW YORK - Police are searching for a gunman who shot an NYPD officer yesterday in East New York.

Last night, officer Jamil Sarwar was patrolling the Cypress Hills Housing Development just before 11 when he was shot in the right leg.

The department's chief spokesman says the bullet may have come from a rooftop of one of the buildings in the development.

Sarwar is in stable condition and recovering at the Jamaica Hospital.

It is unknown if the shooting was random or if the NYPD officer was targeted.
