MANHATTAN - Police in Manhattan shot and seriously injured a Bronx man suspected of attacking at least four people with a hammer earlier this week.

According to authorities, two officers recognized and began following the suspect, identified as David Baril, near Penn Station at around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

That's when they say he swung the claw end of a hammer at a female officer, forcing her partner to fire four shots, hitting Baril twice.

Some of the altercation was caught on surveillance video, which appears to show Baril lunging at the female officer and knocking her to the ground before he is shot by a second officer, who was standing just inches away.

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton commended both officers for their actions, particularly the male officer -- who he says may have saved his partner's life, based on the surveillance video.

Baril's former neighbors say he was confrontational and was supposed to be on medication.

Baril is listed in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.
