BENSONHURST - Some Bensonhurst residents say they do not want a garbage facility built in their neighborhood.

The Department of Sanitation has proposed a plan to bring trash to Bensonhurst by truck and transfer the waste on barges at Gravesend Bay. Residents say that dredging the bay to make room for barge docking could unearth harmful substances.

Neighbors say a case against the city regarding the building of a garbage facility is still in litigation.

A spokesperson for the Sanitation Department said that an extensive and thorough environmental review for the Southwest Marine Transfer Station was upheld by courts.
