Publishing exec Black named new schools chancellor

NEW YORK - (AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg has named a toppublishing executive to head the nation's largest school system.

Bloomberg announced Cathie Black would replace longtimechancellor Joel Klein, whose departure was announced yesterday. Hehas overseen the city's 1.1 million-pupil school system since 2002.

Klein said he was leaving to become an executive vice presidentat News Corp. The mayor said he had been looking to leave for awhile.

Black becomes the city's first female schools chancellor.

She has served as chairwoman of Hearst Magazines, and also spenteight years at USA Today. She was president, publisher, boardmember and executive vice president at Gannett.
