BENSONHURST - A Bensonhurst man was honored today for his heroic actions in saving an 18-month-old baby last month.

Borough President Marty Markowitz and other community leaders proclaimed today Qing Chen Recognition Day in the City of New York after he helped save the infant, who had squeezed passed an air conditioner and fell out a second-story window.

Chen was working at a pharmacy across the street when he observed the child hanging on to a narrow awning. When a ladder turned out to be too short to make the rescue, he ran through the building in an effort to find the child’s family.

Chen, who says he does not consider himself a hero, says that caretakers should take his experience as a lesson and be more mindful of their children’s whereabouts.

The child was not injured.
