BENSONHURST - Parents, teachers and students rallied in Bensonhurst today in an effort to thwart a proposal by the city’s Department of Education to collocate the Success Academy Charter School into I.S. 96 Seth Low.

The protest was held before a public hearing organized by community education council districts 20 and 21.

Success Academy is kindergarten through fourth grade while I .S. 96 is sixth through eighth grade. The DOE posted a statement on its website stating that the proposed colocation will not negatively impact students' education or programming and that the building is equipped to handle the additional students.

Protesters say that they are worried the school will be overpopulated and place a burden on students and teachers.

DOE officials are scheduled to vote on the proposed colocation on Oct. 15. If approved, the change will go into effect at the start of the 2014-2015 school year.
