Ramp onto the Gowanus Expressway still closed

BROOKLYN - A ramp onto the Gowanus Expressway that was expected to be open by now is still closed, causing traffic troubles for Brooklyn drivers.

The stretch is the entrance ramp onto the Gowanus southbound from Prospect and 3rd avenues. The New York state Department of Transportation shut it down on July 10 so that it could start construction on a deteriorated bridge deck and steel structure. DOT officials said it would reopen Sept. 8.

Drivers say this continues to be a huge inconvenience for them because it is the only southbound entrance in the area. The alternative route is to take the 3rd or 4th avenues all the way down to 65th Street, but drivers said that route takes sometimes adds almost an hour onto their commute.

The state DOT is now expecting construction to last a few more weeks. Oct. 1 is the new deadline.
