DUMBO - The proposal for a new transportation option that could make traveling easier for Brooklyn commuters was discussed Tuesday at the Brooklyn Real Estate Summit in DUMBO.

The new transportation idea, called the "East River Skyway," would be similar to The Roosevelt Tram and would take people back and forth across parts of Brooklyn and the East River.

Published reports show that an estimated 5,000 people an hour would be able to travel in each direction in gondolas that can fit up to 38 people each. The gondolas would arrive to pick up commuters every 30 to 40 seconds and connect parts of Brooklyn with Queens and Manhattan.

Dan Levy, founder of the East River Skyway, says he got the inspiration for the project when he went for a ski trip in the Alps. He said he thought the gondolas would be a helpful and efficient way for commuters to travel across the city.

The building process for the East River Skyway would reportedly be done in three phases, costing between $75 million and $125 million.

Another idea discussed at the summit, which was held inside the Brooklyn Museum, included turning the old Domino Sugar Factory into apartments.

Organizers say the summit had a record attendance of more than 800 people. They say they expect next year to be even bigger.
