Real-life hero plucks woman from burning Bushwick building

BUSHWICK - An elderly woman who was rescued Wednesday from her burning Bushwick apartment has a Good Samaritan to thank for her life.

Witnesses say flames engulfed a three-story, wood frame house on Covert Street. The fire quickly spread to houses on either side of the structure. Neighbors say some heroic bystanders, including Jose Reyez, ran upstairs to get a woman who was trapped on the third floor. However, witnesses say the Good Samaritans came back empty-handed when they couldn't find the woman. Reyez went back a second time and found the woman, who neighbors say had smoke rising from her clothing when she was rescued. The victim was taken to Wyckoff Hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters arrived at the scene after the rescue. They helped residents in the other buildings escape. Sources tell News 12 Brooklyn a cigarette started the fire.
