BROOKLYN - Starting tonight the MTA will shut down service on the R Line from Court Street to Whitehall Street for 12 to 14 months.

Workers will repair the Montague Tube that connects Brooklyn to Manhattan. This mile-long pair of tunnels sustained extensive damage during Hurricane Sandy, when 27 million gallons of water flooded and destroyed the underwater track system.

The service shutdown will require passengers to transfer to other lines.

For those affected by these disruptions there will be a new ferry stop to help commuters get into the city. Starting Monday the Seastreak Rockaway Ferry will begin service to the Brooklyn Army Terminal at 58th Street in Sunset Park.
