Report: Brooklyn subways far from squeaky clean

BROOKLYN - Two Brooklyn subway lines were found to be the dirtiest and most deteriorated on a recent list compiled by the Straphangers Campaign.

The annual ?shmutz? survey found that the M and D lines are the worst of the worst in the city. While the report found the cars on the M line to be the dirtiest, with only 32 percent deemed as clean, D cars were appointed the title of most deteriorated.

The Straphangers Campaign blames MTA service cuts, citing the 50 cleaning staff members that were let go last year. Although many riders are frustrated, some understand the conditions to be a consequence of the budget gap.

After the report was released, the campaign is calling for the MTA to pay closer attention to the impact its cuts will have on car cleanliness. NYC transit agreed, but also asked riders to be mindful of picking up their trash.
