BROOKLYN - Police are closing in on a suspect in a 10-year-old cold case slaying, according to published reports.

Chanel Petro-Nixon, a 16-year-old Bed-Stuy High School honors student, was found dead and stuffed in a garbage bag on Kingston Avenue after she went missing on Father's Day in 2006.

The New York Post, citing an earlier report from TV station Pix11, says that the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office has zeroed-in on former classmate Veron Primus.

Chanel was last seen alive leaving her home to apply for a job at a nearby restaurant. She was found four days later.

Officials ruled the cause of death strangulation.

The victim's family, which told News 12 in 2014 it had faith police would one day catch the killer, declined to comment on camera about the latest development.

Off camera, family members did say they are aware of the case and are overwhelmed by the new developments.
