WILLIAMSBURG - A new study shows rape cases have risen 275 percent in Williamsburg and the startling statistic has many in the area worried.

According to a regular police report called Comp Stat, there have been 15 reported rapes so far this year, compared to four around this time last year.

Residents say they were even more alarmed to find out the actual break down of the statistics. According to police, seven of the 15 reported rapes through August of this year were committed by acquaintances, six were domestic cases and two involved strangers.

Police say they're doing everything they can to help, officers have stepped up patrols in the area, but they say the most important thing residents can do, is report a rape if it happens.
