BROOKLYN - Residents who live near the Gowanus Canal say people are abandoning cars along the road.

Several cars have been found near Third Avenue between 35th and 45th streets left behind by their owners. Neighbors say the abandoned cars are contributing to the dearth of parking in the area and are also an eyesore.

Assemblyman Felix Ortiz says a solution to the problem could be stricter parking enforcement. Several streets have rusted over parking meters that don't work, Ortiz says.

Residents say a van fire that killed two men Friday night prompted concerns about the forgotten vehicles. Police say the men who died inside the van were homeless.
