KENSINGTON - Residents are demanding the state make Ocean Parkway safer after a recent study named the parkway the most dangerous road, with the highest death count in Brooklyn.

The most recent accident happened Monday in Kensington when an elderly woman died after being hit by a tractor-trailer at the corner of Church Avenue and Prospect Expressway.

Back in February, the Tri-State Transportation Campaign looked at traffic fatalities involving pedestrians and found Ocean Parkway had the highest number of deaths than any other street in the borough from 2009 to 2011.

Councilman Brad Lander says he provided funding a year ago for a safety upgrade at Church Avenue and Ocean Parkway, but the state Department of Transportation has not done anything yet.

The Department of Transportation says it reviewed the proposed improvements to the intersection and found that they would not actually improve safety.

However, it insists that it is working with the city to revise the plans and make the intersection safer for all who live and work in the area.
