GOWANUS - Some Gowanus residents say the only reasonably priced grocery store in the neighborhood will soon disappear.

They say the Pathmark supermarket on 12th Street is the only place where they can buy affordable groceries and they would hate to see it go. Pathmark employees say they've been told by their corporate office that the store will close in December.

Melissa Anceravige, of Gowanus, says she's worked at the store for the past 19 years. After learning that A&P, which owns the supermarket, filed for bankruptcy, she and her coworkers have tried to find new jobs.

"How can you afford to feed your family when they are taking away the only affordable supermarket that we have?" says Anceravige.

Anceravige has started an online petition to at least get a different supermarket on the property after a bankruptcy court judge gave the lease to a real estate company.
