BROOKLYN - A retired NYPD lieutenant almost died after suffering a heart attack, and he says the doctors at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center helped save his life.

John Dalton's ordeal started like any other day for him -- working out on his treadmill at home. Then his wife, Maryann, heard a loud thud and found him on the treadmill, unconscious and bleeding from his cheek.

Maryann called out for a neighbor, who gave Dalton CPR until an ambulance rushed him to Brookdale. It turned out his arteries were clogged after years of poor eating and lack of exercise. Doctors opened his arteries with two stents, without open heart surgery.

Dalton began recovering fairly quickly, Maryann says.

Doctors say early CPR is what saved Dalton's life and that everyone should know how to perform it. Adults should receive 30 chest compressions followed by two ventilations, repeated until help arrives.

Dr. Hal Chadow says 1 million Americans each year suffer a heart attack, and half of them don't even make it to the hospital.
