BROOKLYN - The driver charged in a fatal hit-and-run accident had his first court date today.

A grand jury is looking at evidence to determine if there is enough proof to connect Robert DeCarlo to the crime and formally charge him in this case. Investigators say DeCarlo was speeding down Flatlands Avenue in a stolen minivan last week when he hit a mother and her two daughters while they were waiting at a bus stop.

One daughter, a 12-year-old, was killed. DeCarlo turned himself in to police a day later.

There was a delay at the beginning of the hearing because DeCarlo did not have a lawyer, so a public defender had to be picked and then appointed to him.

The suspect now faces more than a dozen charges for the incident including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and assault. There is no word yet on when the grand jury will make their decision.
