A Wegmans grocery store is coming to Brooklyn. The Rochester-based, family-owned business says it will take up residence at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

BROOKLYN - A Wegmans grocery store is coming to Brooklyn.

The Rochester-based, family-owned business says it will take up residence at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Construction of the 74,000-square-foot facility will be part of the redevelopment at the yard.

A Wegmans spokesperson says more than 500 people will be hired, with full-time positions included. 

The company has consistently ranked as one of the top grocery stores in the nation by Consumer Reports and the Food Network.

Loyal customers tell News 12 that they see the chain as being similar to Whole Food and Fairway Market, but with lower prices. Other Brooklyn residents say they are excited to receive fresh produce in an area that lacks supermarkets.

This will be the first Wegmans location in New York City. There is no exact timeline for its opening.
