Russian community mourns NYPD officer shot in BK

BENSONHURST - The Orthodox Russian community is mourning an NYPD officer who died Saturday after he was shot in a Brooklyn traffic stop last Monday.

Kings County Hospital doctors pronounced Russel Timoshenko, 23, dead at 4:14 Saturday. The police officer suffered two gunshots to his head, cutting of oxygen to his brain. He had been living on life support and was paralyzed.

The American flag flew at half-staff at the 71st Precinct, where Timoshenko worked. Bensonhurst's Church of New Martyrs and Confessors on 18th Avenue is holding public candle-light vigils.

"If you look spiritually ... it never ends," said parishioner Tatyana Borshchevskya. "So maybe it's just the beginning for Russel."

Although there is no official word on when Timoshenko will be laid to rest, published reports say he will be buried Tuesday.

Robert Ellis and Dexter Bostic, who were captured in rural Pennsylvania, and Lee Woods, who was captured in New York, now face first-degree murder charges. The suspects are due back in court Monday.

Another officer, Herman Yan, sustained less severe injuries in the shooting and was released from the hospital.
