BROOKLYN - A safety improvement plan for the intersection of Ocean Parkway and Church Avenue has been approved.

Councilman Lander said he set money aside to fulfill the project, but he needed permission from the state Department of Transportation to begin.

Lander says the improvements will include a pedestrian island, visible crosswalk markings and more speed limit signs.

The plan comes in response to an elderly woman being hit and killed by a tractor-trailer at the intersection in June.
