BROOKLYN - A severe storm yesterday hampered the morning commute for residents and students as it left downed trees in its wake.

Crews are out clearing downed trees and power lines. Con Edison is reporting there are more than 1,000 customers without power and restoration time is 8 p.m.

In the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, witnesses say thesky went pitch black at about 5:30 p.m. Trees started waving aroundlike blades of grass. Large branches snapped and hit cars, smashingwindshields.
