BROOKYLN - A senior center in Sheepshead Bay is abruptly shutting its doors after it received a letter from the city's Department for the Aging saying its contract will be terminated by the end of the month.

Young Israel of Bedford Bay senior center officials say they believe the Department for the Aging lacks the funding to keep the center open.

The news is heartbreaking for the nearly 70 senior citizens who spend time together there each day. They say it's a home away from home that offers a chance to meet up with friends, socialize, do activities together and read.

Seniors say there are other centers in the neighborhood, but many are further away and would require multiple bus trips.
