BROOKLYN - As Hurricane Irene begins to make herself known across the borough, Red Cross officials want residents to know that their shelters are open and ready to take anyone in.

At a shelter in Hunts Point, The Bronx, officials say that as of 10 p.m., only three people were staying at the shelter, but officials say that they expect to see that number rise as weather conditions worsen.

Officials say there are more than 50 shelters open across all five boroughs.
