Spokesperson: Brookdale Hospital not being shuttered

BROWNSVILLE - Brookdale Hospital is dispelling rumors it is shutting down after recent layoffs sparked fears that it would close. The hospital, which serves more than 1 million people from Brownsville, East New York and Canarsie, recently laid off 114 workers. The workers included union and non-union employees, doctors and management. A spokesperson for the hospital says the layoffs were a response to drastic cuts in Medicaid reimbursements and the economic downturn.
