BROOKLYN - With temperatures blazing into the 90s, many Brooklyn residents are heading to appliance stores to pick up air conditioning units and fans.

The Lowe's store in Gowanus was packed today with shoppers looking to get appliances that would help them beat the unbearable heat. Some were on the market for a portable air conditioner, while others wanted a wall unit.

According to a Lowe's associate, when buying an air conditioner, shoppers must keep in mind how powerful they want their unit to be, the size of the room where it will be installed, and how much they are willing to spend. Some smaller air conditioners can go for as little as $99.

For shoppers on a tighter budget, there are alternative ways to keep cool, such as standalone or ceiling fans.
