State senator pushes for new bicycle safety laws

(09/13/10) BROOKLYN - A new push for bike safety laws has been launched following the death of a young woman over the weekend.

Jasmine Herron, 23, was riding her bike along Atlantic Avenue in Prospect Heights when a parked car door hit her. The impact forced her off of her bike and into the path of a B45 bus.

The bus hit her and killed her instantly. The driver of the car was charged with driving without a license.

To prevent anything like this from happening again, state Sen. Eric Adams (D - N.Y.) wants all prospective New York drivers to take a course on bike safety before they are handed a license.
