BROOKLYN - A statue of Jesus Christ reported stolen outside a Catholic church in Brooklyn was returned Friday, according to church officials.

Police say Saints Peter and Paul Church reported the statue stolen yesterday when three people caught on surveillance video were seen removing it from church property.

The diocese of the church says a family found the statue in the trash and recognized it after seeing the story on the news.

The family returned the statue to the church, and it is now being restored in Westchester.

Police say no arrests have been made in the case.

Even though it was returned, there was still some damage to the base and right hand of the statue. An art studio has volunteered to repair the damage and also replace the statue with a larger one.

The church plans to install the new statue outside of the rectory, and will keep the old one indoors when the parish's new church opens in 2019.
