BROOKLYN - There are 76 unique neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and News 12 is uncovering the stories behind how many of them got their names.

With research and help from writer Gregory Quinn, many may be surprised to find out that Sheepshead Bay was not named after sheep. It instead comes from the Sheepshead Fish, which no longer inhabit the area.

And the neighborhood of DUMBO was not named after a Disney elephant, but is an acronym that stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It's previous names include Fulton Ferry, Olympia and Gairville, to name a few.
