BED-STUY - The family of a Brooklyn mother allegedly strangled to death by her boyfriend this week is speaking out to help other women avoid the same fate. Officials say Ulyesse Pittman, 22, was killed earlier this week when her boyfriend, Depri Padgett, charged into her Bed-Stuy apartment and choked her. Pittman's two children, both less than 5 years old, were not home at the time. The victim's mother says the couple had been together for more than a year, but that women should not be afraid to leave an abusive relationship. "A lot of young girls think that," said Pittman's mother, Barbara Mitchell. "And it's not true. Somebody's playing mind games with you. You can be suckered." Police say Padgett turned himself in, even admitting that he told Pittman that he planned on killing her. He has been charged with strangulation and manslaughter.
