Students, activists rally for New York DREAM Act

The act would give undocumented immigrants access to financial aid to go to college. (3/19/14)

NEW YORK - Students and activists rallied Wednesday in Lower Manhattan after the state Senate rejected the New York DREAM Act.

The act would give undocumented immigrants access to financial aid to go to college. 

The measure, which passed in the Assembly, fell short of support in the Senate by just two votes on Monday.

After years of building support for the cause, demonstrators now want Gov. Andrew Cuomo to step in and allocate the estimated $25 million needed to the act in the state's budget. 

The state budget deadline is April 1.
