BROOKLYN - It's time for parents to check if their children are up to date on their immunizations before they head back to school.

The city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has issued School Admission Immunization Requirements.

According to the department's website, the law requires that all new students - children entering day care, nursery school, pre-school or pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten through grade 12 in New York City for the first time - must show proof of having received a complete medical evaluation.

Flu shots are not mandatory, but highly recommended.

Doctors at Montefiore Medical Center say required immunizations for children under 11 years old include measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, diphtheria, pertussis and polio.

Physicians recommend vaccines for HPV and meningitis for older students.

Doctors also say children with asthma should get a head start on their medication around this time of year.

All school-aged children should visit a physician at least once a year, doctors say.
