BROOKLYN - Two Democratic candidates are vying to become Brooklyn?s first African-American Surrogate Court judge in a hotly contested race.

Judges ShawnDya L. Simpson and Diana Johnson will face off in Tuesday?s primary election.

Simpson spent part of Friday morning at a Carroll Gardens senior center to tell constituents why she should be chosen to handle the backlog of will and estate cases. She told residents it?s all about her experience as a Brooklyn prosecutor.

Johnson, who has run before for the position, has recently been endorsed by a coalition of leaders who say she will clean up the borough?s troubled court system.

Observers say voter turnout may become a real issue in the race because many don?t know an election is coming up.
